Wood briquettes, compared on density, shape and residue

A briquette is sawdust compressed without glue, and it exists because it stores like a box and burns like dense hardwood. The figures are the same family as pellets and are published far less consistently: calorific value in kWh per kilogram, moisture as a percentage, ash content as a percentage. Where all three appear, the shelf can be compared honestly; where none does, a page here says so rather than filling the gap. Two things then separate briquettes from every other fuel. The shape is functional: round briquettes with a central hole burn faster and brighter because air passes through the core, solid rectangular blocks burn slower and are what people bank a stove with overnight, and the difference is bigger than any brand difference on this shelf. And the behaviour as they burn — some briquettes hold their form to the end and some expand and crumble into the ash pan within twenty minutes. That is the single most common complaint in the family, it is visible in nobody's specification, and the listings that mention it are the ones the pages here quote.
