Stove glass, and the difference that is not optional

Stove glass is not glass in the window sense. It is a glass ceramic — the material sold under names like Robax and Neoceram — with a near-zero coefficient of expansion, rated for continuous service around 700 °C and short peaks above it. Toughened soda-lime glass, which looks identical on a photograph, fails at a fraction of that. The distinction is the first thing to read on any listing, and a listing that does not name the material is a listing to leave. The thickness is 4 or 5 mm on almost every domestic appliance and is taken from the old pane. The dimensions are the work: the pane is cut to the rebate, not to the visible opening, and the figure to take is the old piece or the channel, with the tolerance the supplier states — good suppliers work to ±1 mm and say so. Then what is sold: ready-made panes for named appliances, which is the easy path when the model is listed, and cut-to-size, which is the answer for everything else. Shapes with a radius or an arch exist and cost more, and the suppliers who accept a drawing are the ones that make an old stove repairable.
