Fire grates, compared on spacing as much as on size

A grate holds the fuel above the ash so air can reach it from below, and it is the part that warps and burns away first on a stove used hard. Replacements are chosen on the dimensions — length, width, and the thickness that has to clear the ash pan below — and on one figure that decides how the fire behaves: the bar spacing. Wide spacing lets ash fall freely and lets small fuel fall with it; narrow spacing holds a bed of embers, which is what wood wants. That is the reason many wood stoves are sold without a grate at all, burning on a flat bed of ash, while every multi-fuel appliance has one — coal needs air from below and wood does not. The material is cast iron almost everywhere, and the figure that predicts life is the section thickness of the bars rather than the alloy name. Two mechanisms then divide the shelf: a fixed grate that is simply lifted out, and a riddling grate that rocks or rotates on a lever to drop ash without opening the door.
