Firelighters, compared on burn time and on what they smell of

A firelighter has one published figure — the burn time per piece, usually eight to twelve minutes — and one real decision, which is what it is made of. Wood wool and wax is the type that dominates this shelf: shredded softwood soaked in paraffin or a vegetable wax, odourless once alight, and the one most stove makers recommend because it leaves nothing. Kerosene-impregnated blocks are cheaper per light, catch faster, and smell — which is a preference outdoors and a problem in a living room. Gel and paste exist and are bought mostly for grills. The figures to read against burn time are the piece count per pack, which is what makes cost per light comparable, and the weight per piece, because a long burn time from a small piece is what a cold flue needs. Then the certifications: a firelighter for indoor use commonly carries a DIN-registered mark for solid firelighters, and the packs aimed at food use carry one for grill safety.
