A spark guard is a mesh screen in front of an open fire, and it belongs to open hearths rather than to closed stoves — a stove with a door has one already. Three figures decide. The total width and the height have to exceed the opening on all three sides, and the height is the one usually underestimated: embers leave a fire upward before they leave it forward. The mesh aperture is the figure that makes it a spark guard rather than a decoration; a coarse decorative grille stops logs rolling and stops nothing else. Then the format, which is the real choice. A three-panel folding screen stands by itself, adjusts to the hearth and folds flat, and is the most common answer. A single flat panel is cheaper and needs feet or a wall to lean on. A curved one-piece guard stands best of all and fits nothing but a straight hearth. The stability is what the pages here look for hardest, because a screen that is knocked over by a cat is worse than none: base weight, foot span, and whether the panels lock at an angle.
