The subject of this site, and how it is funded
StoveVerdict is an independent editorial site about domestic wood heating — wood stoves, pellet stoves, fireplace inserts and wood-burning cookers — the flue beside them: insulated liners, stove pipes, elbows, wall sleeves, chimney cowls, rain caps, dampers and pipe heat shields — the wood: log splitters, kindling splitters, rocker saws and splitting axes — the protection: spark plates, floor plates, wall heat shields, spark guards and carbon monoxide alarms — the upkeep: sweeping sets, chimney brushes, glass cleaners, soot removers, door seals, stove glass, firebricks, grates, ash pans, ash buckets and stove paint — the handling: log baskets, racks, bags, covers, fireplace tools and bellows — and the fuel that goes through a fire every winter: logs, kindling, wood pellets, briquettes and firelighters. It does not cover electric fireplaces and portable heaters, ash vacuums, moisture meters, or barbecues and smokers, all of which are covered elsewhere; nor chimney regulation as a service, nor commissioning, nor anything presented as advice on whether a particular installation may be used. Outputs in kilowatts, efficiency percentages, heatable volumes, flue and spigot diameters, required draughts, flue gas temperatures, mass flows, emission figures, firebox depths, log lengths, cord thicknesses, appliance weights and burn times published by manufacturers are reported as such, with their unit written as published, with their source named, and never derived by us. In particular, an efficiency figure and the standard it was measured under are reported as the two inseparable things they are, and the first is never presented without the second. Nothing here replaces a manufacturer's own instructions, the plate riveted to an appliance, or the rules of the country you are in — and two statements are repeated on every page that touches them: a heatable volume is a published figure about a product measured against a building the maker assumed, and is never presented here as advice about what a particular room needs; and no stove, no liner, no floor plate and no alarm is described on this site as making an installation safe.
