Door seals, compared on diameter, density and adhesive

A door seal is glass-fibre rope, and it is the part that decides whether a stove is controllable. A stove that will not slow down on a closed air control is almost always a stove whose seal has flattened — the fire is drawing air round the door instead of through the control. Replacement is bought on three figures. The diameter — 6, 8, 10 and 12 mm dominate, with 14 and 16 for larger doors — must match the groove, and the measurement is taken from the old rope or from the channel, never from the gap. The form follows: round rope for most doors, flat tape for glass retention and for some ash-pan doors, and a self-adhesive flat tape for the panes that are held by clips. The density separates the cheap from the durable: a soft low-density rope seats easily and flattens within a season, a firm one resists both. Then the length against the door perimeter, with enough spare to be cut square, and the adhesive: high-temperature seal cement is supplied with the better kits and sold separately otherwise, and ordinary silicone will not survive a week.
